Frequently Asked Questions
Which Pecard products should I use on horse tack?
For most smooth, oil-tanned tack, including bridles, reins, stirrup leathers, and breast collars, use Pecard Saddle Conditioner (Leather Dressing) for conditioning and weather protection. Use Eque-Care Harness Oil that require faster dry times or are harder to apply the Dressing to. Also great for touch ups and on the go. Always test on a hidden area first.
Will Pecard darken my saddle or bridle?
A light, temporary darkening can occur, especially on lighter leathers. This typically softens as the product absorbs and the tack is used. Apply thin coats, allow absorption, and buff off any excess.
How often should I condition horse tack?
Frequency depends on climate and use. For active riders, condition every 4 to 8 weeks or whenever leather feels dry. After heavy rain, mud, sweat, or washing, clean and re-condition once dry. Store tack away from heat and direct sunlight.
Is Pecard safe for all leathers on my tack?
Safe for most smooth or finished, oil-tanned, bridle, and latigo leathers. Not recommended for suede or nubuck, as it can flatten the nap. Avoid unfinished rawhide unless you have tested and prefer the darkening and softening effect.
Does it affect stitching, wool fleece, or grip?
Applied sparingly and buffed, Pecard will not harm stitching. Not designed for use on suede, rough-out surfaces, wool fleece, etc.
How do I apply Saddle Conditioner or Harness Oil to tack?
- Clean then let dry.
- Apply thinly with a soft cloth or sponge, working into bends and stress points.
- Allow absorption for several hours or overnight.
- Buff excess to a soft sheen. Repeat light coats if leather is very dry.
